How To Make A Simple Pasta Sauce (Even If You Can’t Cook)

February 27, 2014 @ 21:36 By Gavin Webber 10 Comments

Have you always wanted to make a delicious, yet simple pasta sauce from really basic ingredients, even though you are not a whiz in the kitchen?

Well do I have recipe for you!

I reckon that even Stephanie Alexander would probably agree (if she ever read this blog of course).

Now, I am going to make this even easier, because all of the ingredients are easy to grow at home in your very own backyard.  Even if you don’t have your own veggie patch, then all items can be source at your local green grocer.

There are only five main ingredients.  Basil, Oregano, Onion, Garlic, and Tomato.

The fresher the ingredients are, the better this sauce will taste.

Simple Pasta Sauce Ingredients

Gav’s Simple Pasta Sauce

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Fresh Basil, roughly chopped
  • ½ cup Fresh Oregano, roughly chopped
  • 3 small or 1 large brown onion, roughly chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, unpeeled and smashed
  • 800 gm Fresh or canned Tomatoes.
  • splash of olive oil
  • Salt and Pepper to taste

Method

  1. On a medium heat, add about 2 Tablespoons of oil to a large frying pan.
  2. Add the onions, and fry until translucent.
  3. Add all other ingredients, stir, then cover and simmer for 30 minutes.
  4. Season to taste, and serve immediately onto fresh home made pasta!

Now that wasn’t too hard, was it?  You certainly do not have to be a Master Chef to make this simple pasta sauce.  Not only is it delicious, but it is nutritious as well.  No artificial anything and straight from the garden.

So what can you use this sauce on?  Well you could try my home made Ravioli, or home-made Fettuccine, or even my home-made Spaghetti.  Really, any pasta will do, even if you haven’t made it yourself.  This sauce will enhance any pasta meal.

Bon appétit!

So what do you think of this pasta sauce?  Easy or what?

I heard once that tearing basil will impart the flavours even better than chopping it. 🙂 Nothing like the flavour of home grown ingredients. We’ve had a few meals of late that are 100% from my garden or everything bar the eggs (my chooks are on strike 🙁 so I swapped some eggs off a friend in town) are ours. There must be a correlation that the greater the carbon miles the less flavour there is.

I reckon you’re right Jessie. There is a direct correlation between low food miles and fantastic flavour! Our gardens and cooking is direct proof of that.

OK Gav, i might not be able to make actual pasta but the sauce ive got covered. Pretty much all of the above adding browned mince, bay leaves, grated carrots and celery and a little sugar. Throw everything into a slow cooker and let it rip for 6-8 hours until it is caramelized on top. Yummmy. I box up the whole lot and it makes its way into about several different meals from cottage pies to lasagna.

Sounds delicious Lynda! BTW, one of my favourite meals is Cottage Pie. Kim and I have our own take on it, but each tastes fantastic. The big bonus is the home grown potatoes on top!
