National KAB Sustainable Cities Awards 2010

Update:  New photos added

Yesterday was a big day!

Amy and I travelled up to Sydney yesterday to attend the National Keep Australia Beautiful awards for 2010.  Awake at 0530 to get to the airport on time, then a quick flight to Sydney, then a train to the Circular Quay, then a ferry to the venue.

So did we win?  No, unfortunately, but the best city won on the day.  The top award went to the City of Stirling in Western Australia.   Here is the delegation from the west.

But all was not lost.  The Shire of Melton won the Energy Innovation award which was a fantastic achievement.  You can read the press release here.

I was so honoured to be part of the delegation for our shire.  I am also proud that the value of this blog and all its educational posts was recognised at a national level.  Here is an excerpt from the release.
One of the Melton residents – Gavin – has created an enormous blog which has had 110,000 page views and he’s established the Melton Sustainable Living Group with 15 members.
Anyway, here are a couple of random shots from the day.

The plane we flew to Sydney in.  Carbon emissions were offset.

The award.  Nice, isn't it!  I will be receiving a framed copy soon to hang in my study.

All in all a great day, and I thank our council for inviting Amy and I along for the ride.  Better luck next year!

  2. Well done. You do such a great job and certainly inspire me.
I am really amazed to see that City of Stirling won. I live in Perth and this city has recently been judged as the least sustainable capital in Australia. Good to see that something is going right here.

  4. Just wonderful to read about - super well done Melton and you - amazing Gavin. And that the movement has spread to W.A.

In the meantime it has rained in Melbourne such a lot - did you see that all the jockeys were covered in mud at the end of THE CUP race. Not so good for the hoss racing but brilliant for the region.

Wishing you more gentle rain, Michelle over in Wellington, sending care and huggles to all your famdamily!

  7. Hey Gav well done!!!!!!

You know I was thinking wouldn't it have been fantastic if I was photographing the awards. At this time of year I am photographing so many awards nights.

It would have been a hoot to come up to you and say hi and say "a big congratulations!"

As Miss 40 put it, the environment won out in the end!
