The Year That Was

January 1, 2009 @ 07:49 By Gavin Webber 7 Comments

2008 was a mixed bag of events for us.  Highs and lows, like any family I suppose, but since we began our sustainable lifestyle even little victories seam like big highs and the lows don’t even bother us.

I thought that just for my own records, it would be good to document some of the memorable things we did last year.  I am not a huge fan of lists, but in this instance, I will make an exception.  I added links where I wrote something about the event.

  1. Started this blog
  2. Baked our own daily bread
  3. Preserved our own fruit and vegetables
  4. Became politically active regarding Climate Change
  5. Generated excess electricity via home solar PV
  6. Reduced energy bills by 90% from 2007
  7. Took 6 months to build a Chicken coop
  8. Proud owner of 4 wonderful Chickens
  9. Made jam
  10. Began to stockpile food and essentials
  11. My family stopped thinking I was a crazy middle aged hippy
  12. Presented to local community group
  13. Volunteered to help educated about renewable energy
  14. Started making home brew beer (again)
  15. Cleared our credit card debt (finally)
  16. Helped our neighbours start their own veggie patch
  17. Participated in the Walk Against Warming
  18. Personally met fellow green blogger’s
  19. Introduced Eco-Boy to the world, then he went on strike!
  20. Became a Womble
  21. Started converting front yard to food production
  22. Started using a pressure cooker to make meals
  23. Learnt Self-Hypnosis and have nearly overcome a persistent back injury (not green, but good news).

There are many more achievements I can think of and have probably missed, but this list are the ones that stick out for me.  It was a great year, and if it hadn’t been for my back injury, it would have been stellar!

All in all, it was one I will never forget!

Happy New Year everyone.

Mate, looking at your list in its shortened form is enough… some people take 10 years to achieve that amount. Well Done.

What alot of achievments you and your family have reached in 2008 Gavin. Well done. keep up the gardening stories, they are one of the things that keep me going during the winter months in the UK. Can you believe there are five months of the year here when they don’t even have to cut their lawns!!!!
    Happy New Year, Margaret
