Blog Improvements

March 7, 2014 @ 23:45 By Gavin Webber 17 Comments

wordpress-logo1-300x300Tonight, I spent the evening fixing up a few things on the blog.

Firstly, the mobile theme.  It was a shocker, so I found a new method of rendering it.  If you have a smart phone, you should be able to view the blog in a much better way.

Secondly, comments.  I didn’t really like Disqus comments after I implemented them, but initially I couldn’t find any real alternative.  Until now that is.  You can leave a comment by putting in your name and email address or alternatively signing in with WordPress, Facebook, Twitter, or Google+.  Great login options for one and all.  You cannot leave an anonymous comment, as I want comments to enable community, and not anonymity.  Besides, if you can’t share your name, then why comment at all.  Nothing to hide here.

Thirdly, sharing buttons.  The ones I had were not doing it for me.  Not enough options, and they were clumsy.  The new buttons have more functionality, and still show the total amount of shares per post for each social network.  Feel free to use them any time to share a post that you think is worthy.

Finally, I fixed an issue I had with Google+.  When I published a post, it did not automatically get shared on that network.  I found the error, and fixed that up as well.

Overall, lots of blog improvements to make your reading experience more enjoyable.

All so a big thanks for you support since I moved the my self-hosted WordPress site.  If the stats are anything to go by, people are enjoying the new look, and the content I try to bring to you on an almost daily basis.

Oh, and I intend on recommencing the podcasts again this weekend.  I think my voice is now up to the task, but I may sound a little croaky.  I am sure you won’t mind if my voice is a bit deeper than normal.  Just think of me as a green Barry White!

Enjoy your weekend!

Loking the new look of the blog but I wasn’t a fan of Disqus either.
Glad the voice is back and hope you’re feeling fighting fit again.

Gavin so excited you changed your comment method because I wasn’t commenting before but now I can. I love your new blog header it’s pretty cool and I gather that second picture is beer. Men will love that one. Also we’ve had a couple of double Yorkers and they are always exciting that’s for sure and we always take a picture. Have a great weekend. Regards Kathy A, Brisbane

Yes, Disqus was a bit user unfriendly. I am so glad I found the new system.

Cheers Emma. No, a talented lady in NZ designed it. I wrote a brief post about it; https://www.greeningofgavin.com/2014/03/check-new-tgog-banner.html

Hi again, just happen to be holidaying around Melbourne and watched the news for the first time in weeks and low and behold who is on the news. I said ‘my mate gav’ even my husband said gav. He doesn’t read your blog, but I often read bits of your blog to him and I was so pleased to see you and your ideas and the results from your change in lifestyle.

Ah, I have that already! I just transferred from wordpress.com to wordpress.org last week, and unlike you I am not tech savvy, and know nothing about this – and the amount of advice on the web is overwhelming! So I really appreciate your help with that. Good to know I’m on the right track! (As a seasoned blogger I trust your opinion greatly) : )
