What A Scorcher!

February 2, 2014 @ 21:08 By Gavin Webber 12 Comments

What a weekend, and I don’t mean in a fun way either.

It has been much too hot here in Melton to do much except water the garden, and I have been too overheated to do much anything else.

  • Saturday: 41°C (105.8°F)
  • Sunday: 43°C (109.4°F)
  • Forecast for Monday: 36°C with a late cool change

The only good thing about Saturday was the amount of work I managed to perform in such a short space of time.  This was because it was quite cool in the morning.

I moved my new cheese fridge into place, so that I can start to make cheese in the summer.  It is a small bar fridge, to which I am going to plug into an external thermostat.  Just have to wait for a cool weekend so I can get stuck into cheese making again.

All the outside area were given a good clean, and I watered everything green I could see.

I also set up a new solar shower that Kim bought on-line.  She wants to wash off after swimming on her new little piece of deck that I constructed out of scrap.  By the time I had finished setting it up (but not yet installed), the heat of the day was upon me, so I retreated inside to do a little handy work.  I plan to install it on Wednesday when it is a little cooler.

As we have just finished decorating Ben’s room and the spare room, I fitted a new hook on the back of each door so people could hang their robes on.  Not that there is much call for something as hot as that at the moment!

Then that was it.  I retreated to my office, and sweltered through the heat working on the blog, popping outside occasionally to check on the chickens.

Not much else to tell.  Pretty boring stuff I know, but what else can you do when it is just this hot?

Rock on some cooler weather.  Please.

About the same temperature here today. I just holed up inside after watering this morning. I decluttered a few little areas, baked a lemon/lime tart and did some washing. All riveting stuff. Its cooled off now so the air con is off but the fans are still whirring. Roll on winter, I say!

It overheats during the hot weather. Stays at around 25°C for most of the time. Not great conditions for maturing cheese

Thanks Laurie! I think they are starting to adapt to the heat, but like humans, they will be glad when it is Autumn.

Hi Gavin, its been horrid here in Adelaide too. Cool change here but its very windy – not good with the dry conditions. . My cheese cave/wine fridge is struggling too with this weather. roll on autumn. Cheers Sharon

Totally agree Sharon. Even though it was cool last night, it certainly won’t last very long. Back into the hot weather again tomorrow!

I am waiting for the cooler weather to start making cheese too. I bought a wine fridge but it runs too hot during summer also. I am only just starting out on my cheese making journey and love your e-book Gavin! 🙂

Scorcher, indeed, Gav. It wasn’t much kinder here, in Adelaide.

Our veggie garden in this small, rental unit is tiny. It comprises half a dozen 30cm pots, containing various herbs and salad greens, and a brick planter with a few tomato plants. It gets sun from 9am until 2pm and then falls into shadow due to the house to the west of it. Everything has fared surprisingly well, even with one dosing of water a day–in the evening.

Good effort Paul. Your temps are usually a little higher than ours. I don’t envy you a bit
