Don’t wake up on Sunday with a post election hangover. Do something useful and visit a Sustainable House near you! You will learn so much that you will walk away with your head swimming with ideas.
Did you know that each year the average Australian household contributes 13 tonnes of greenhouse gas to the atmosphere—enough to fill more than 700 balloons every day, while each household also draws an average of 73,000 buckets of water a year – enough for around 12 baths a day. We can do better than that, surely?
“Sustainable House Day, Sunday 8th September will be celebrating its 12th year. The event will continue to showcase some of Australia’s most sustainable homes to the public as millions of Australians continue to embrace renewable energy, recycling, and other practices suitable to their lifestyles.”
This year Homes are open for FREE from 10am – 4pm, Sunday 8th September 2013.
Sadly Gavin there are no sustainable house near me 🙁 I am just starting out so I am sad that there are none here
That is a shame Linda.

We don’t have a sustainable house really… I think we were too young when we started building our home to know to do it . I would like to go back in time and go smaller so we could do solar power for a start. I would love to visit a sustainable house in our area ,will have to check it out next year and see if I can find one. I am sure there are great ideas even for people who built unsustainable houses that are too big.
One thing I do know …sometimes it is just a matter of flicking a switch. We sometimes have ‘sustainable weekends’ where we go without electricity for a weekend (the only bending point we have is if the kids have assignments and need the computer). One year we boiled our water on the combustion stove and everything.
Hi Kim. Very cool. I love the idea of your ‘sustainable weekend’. It really does drive home what would happen and how we would cope if we didn’t receive inputs from the outside world.
