Last year about this time, I predicted that the sky wouldn’t fall because of the introduction of a price on carbon. You can read about it at “The Sky Will Not Fall Due To The Carbon Tax” that I wrote the day before it was introduced.
As expected, I was right. In fact some pretty cool things happened because of it. WWF Australia reports that;
- There has been a 30% increase in renewable energy generation
- An 8% decrease in coal-fired power
- $5 billion allocated for developing large scale solar
So that leads me to the ultimate question. What happened to the scare campaign that the LNP opposition launched. What of those predictions?
So those who still doubt that it made a difference can see from the facts that it has done what it was put into legislation to do. To reduce carbon emissions in this country.
However, more can be done. Further investment in renewable energy by governments, and divestment away from fossil fuels. This action by Market Forces and the ACF is encouraging with an open letter to Australian banks. Every little bit helps.
Anyway, it encourages me that we as a country have taken a bold step in the right direction. Others are following our lead like the USA and China. Watering down the legislation would make us look like a pack of flaming galahs in the eyes of the international community.
Lets remember what is at stake here folks. The future of our species and all other living things on a habitable planet. Climate change is hitting hard, with no sign of easing up. Mother Nature has the last say, and doesn’t care if we believe the science or not. It just is.
So lets keep our actions strong and moving in the right direction, for future generations.
