The Rain in Spain Falls Mainly On the Plain (or anywhere else except Melton!)

November 20, 2008 @ 21:38 By Gavin Webber 10 Comments

This is starting to irritate me a lot.  I know I can’t change the weather, but at least give us a little bit of rain Huey!

Here is the latest weather radar image from the BOM.  It shows that it is raining in nearly every population centre in Australia, except here in Melton.  Click to enlarge.

I am still waiting for the rain, and have been since I cannot remember when.  We had about 3mm two weeks ago, but it only wet the first cm of the soil and that was it.  Before that, it was 3 months since we had an entire day of rain.  Huge cracks are popping up everywhere in the clay soil we have around here.  The medium strip outside our house looks like an earthquake has recently hit.

Map of Greater Melbourne showing Melton in relation to the City.

At least the east side of Melbourne is getting rain, where our water storage is located.  You can see by the map how far away we are from the City.

Maybe we can avert Stage 4 water restrictions yet if the rain in the east keeps up!  It is forecast to rain for the next 4 days, but I have heard that one before.  It always rains in the east of Melbourne, but never the west.  After 8 years of drought, maybe I better get another rainwater tank, so that when we get the Summer storms, we can capture it for the dry times.

I know that this post will prompt many comments from those who live to the north of us in NSW and Qld.  It is like the great flood up there and they probably wish it was dry like it is south of the border!

Sorry for complaining, but my garden is not growing very fast due to the extreme lack of nutrient rich rain.  Tap water just does not cut the mustard!  Maybe this rain dance post will bring it on.  Here is hoping for at least some precipitation.

We are waiting for rain, too, Gav!
Let’s hope ALL of us get some rain.

Lots of lovely drops from the sky. Gently falling on to the soil. Ahhh…. 🙂

I would do you a rain dance but I am too busy responding to awards and Memes!

Also I would be frightened that we would get even more rain and you still wouldn’t get any, we are leaking all over the place as it is.

I will cross my fingers for you though

    Gavin
There’s no way anyone here in Sydney is wishing for anything but lotsa rain here, there, everywhere, and especially in southern Australia where the drought has sunk its teeth in and isn’t letting go.
We’ve had good rainfall this year, but my rain gauge says it’s still below average. The Govt. restrictions still apply here too, even thought storages have been steadily up in the mid 60s for months.
    Hang in there.

I was thinking about this yesterday there are two types of people those who take notice of the rain how much how little and those who don’t. Glad you are one of the take notice types.

I remember praying every night for rain a year ago every single night, every time I saw a cloud, now we have a full dam, and everything is so green it hurts you eyes, we are really blessed.

but maybe when we finish being blessed it will be your turn and the turn of all the others who watch the skies and pray.

Your not whinging Gavin – just praying out loud!! Sending rain vibes your way.

    Hi Gav,

I have to admit over here in the Eastern suburbs every time it rains I send thanks and hope you are getting some too. Sorry to hear my hope is currently being unanswered.

Rail all you want… fighting the weather is a tough job and if we go to stage 4 gardening life is just going to get scary.

    Kind Regards
    Belinda

    Hi Gavin,

I think I have a pretty good idea of how you’re feeling. I live north of SE Qld and it was driving me nuts listening to all the news reports about the massive amounts of rain they were getting. The rain gods finally smiled on us yesterday and we got our first decent rain for ages.

Keep your fingers crossed, if we can get some rain then so can you.

    Hi Gavan,

I live in Melton too and sometimes I get the feeling rain just doesn’t like us;)

    Cheers, Karl
