The Beauty of Renewable Energy

October 4, 2008 @ 15:41 By Gavin Webber 7 Comments

Another fantastic week of energy conservation and production at TGOG’s house! I got so excited this week that I made a movie. Now, because there are not many moving part to a Photovoltaic system, I decided to spice up the movie with a little bit of action and music. Break out the organic popcorn and enjoy!

Now for the best part of the week, and everyones favourite, the graphs. The first graph is of the weekly meter readings that I take every Friday evening. It depicts that the meter has spun backward so much over the last month, that we haven’t paid for electricity since about 20th August 2008. A good effort and thankyou Sol! Normally the line would be on a upward trend without the input from self generation. Click on the image to enlarge. The next graph is of total usage for the property. It is in the same format as previous power graphs with Brown for Grid (100% Green power Wind), Green for clean Solar PV, and Blue for total kWh utilised. The Y-axis represents the daily average usage for the specified week. The black trend line is a 2 point moving average based on grid usage, with a very noticeable downward trend. The date range is the same as the previous graph to make comparison simpler. Click on the image to enlarge.

Got to love a graph!

As the kids have all been on school holidays and have spent a bit of time in the evening on their PC’s, the total consumption has risen since last week. Thank goodness that they all go back to school next week!

    Hiya Gav:
Point system for you. I know you love your graphs but graphs: 1.5.
Eco Boy: 8.5. The choice of music:11.9. You are a very clever fellow.
I think we should have an inclusion of the girls and the efforts they put in or you could star them in your next video as the Organic Farmers Best Friends. And don’t forget Butchy as he is busy keeping all your projects safe from the Power Companies who want to rip us of with all their horrible brown coal generated power.
Here’s an oxymoron for you. Green power is free to generate yet the power companies want to charge you more for the privelige of buying green power from them. Keep up the gr8 work your doing. Your an inspiration to us all. Stacey (Mrs Wombat057)

Hey Gav, still love a graph! I bet it is the most amazing feeling to NOT get an electirc bill. That just has to tickle you pink I’d reckon. I watched Gardening Guru’s and they had a special on sustainable living/energy. Was amazed to learn that my old cruddy hot water system produces so much green house gas. The description was 8 tonnes per year! Thats 1 metre high, by 1 metre wide, by 50 metres long AND THEN multiply that by 8! Holy Moly if that doesn’t make you open your eyes then nothing else will!!!!

Bring on the dancing chickens, you could dress Butch up as “The Great Gonzo” from the Muppets. Kim can make Biscuits and then you’ll have a all singing, all dancing eco production with a little bicky on the side.

    Well Done

    Hi Eco Boy

I’ve just been catching up on your blog and I’ve really been enjoying the posts. Those chicken eggs you posted awhile ago look sooo good. And I love the graph – it must be such a great feeling to know that you’re generating more electricity than you use!

    Excellent results Gav.

It must be very pleasing to watch your meter spin backwards.

    Regards, Gary
